NOTES: 1. What are described as CONSTANT VARIETIES in the listings for these issues are generally features described and illustrated in 'Penny Red Stars', Parts 1 and 2, by Wiggins and Tonna.
2. Customers seeking examples of shades until recently listed in SG catalogues as SG38 (C10(2)) Pale Red (9.4.57), and SG39 (C10(3)) Pale Rose (March 1857), and also Bright Rose-red (C10(1)) (March-April 1857) should note that these were incorrectly listed under C10 in the 16th and earlier editions of the Specialised catalogue and should be deleted. They fall into the period of printing at Fleet Street immediately before the fire of March 1857, and the subsequent transfer of operations to Savoy Street, where printing continued until July 1857, and should therefore be regarded as C9s (see the TRANSITIONALS page). This issue has now been corrected in the new (2020) edition.
3. The scarce late shade, C10(6) Pale Rose-pink, usually associated with 1863 printings, is easily confused with the Transitional Pale Rose shade, C9A(1). It has long been thought that the simple way to distinguish them was by watermark, stamps watermarked Large Crown Type I necessarily being C9A(1)s, printed at Savoy Street. However the recent discovery of examples of the shade (see examples below, now known from Plates 48, 57, 59, 61, 63 and 66) watermarked Large Crown I, but from plates not at press at Savoy Street, shows that these stamps MUST be correctly plated in order for them to be properly determined. Although with practice, in most cases, the two shades are just about distinguishable, it is true to say that this is a very fine distinction, and far from foolproof!
