TE

1857 2d Blue/1858 2d Deep Blue A FU+ SCARCE MATCHED PAIR, including the VERY SCARCE Perf.16 issue, both centred low left, with FULL PERFS, cancelled respectively with a SCARCE CLIFTON '959' and an English Provincial numeral. Not noted as such by any authority, I believe that this lettering 'TE' completes the vertical 'E' row series of MAJOR RE-ENTRIES, normally thought to end with 'SE'. I have added 1200dpi scans of the relevant portions of both these stamps, showing clear marks in the top serif of the 'E' of 'POSTAGE', the top right corner of the NE star, a diagonal scratch in the lower E margin, marks below the top right serif of the 'T', a thickening of the upper third of the right frame-line of the 'T' square, and a vertical mark alongside the upright of the 'E'. These marks are thus clearly shown throughout the period of use of this plate, and cannot be discounted as simple corrosion. Cat.700+. New!
